NAME: Angus McDonald, the World's Greatest Detective
CANON: The Adventure Zone
POINT IN CANON: Story and Song - Finale, part 3
AGE: 11
APPEARANCE: Due to the nature of the show, it being a D&D podcast with no visuals, there's no one accepted design for Angus. He is described as wearing "a fancy-boy suit", "a blue fancy boy cap", and generally as looking "fresh to death. He- he looks- he looks very fancy. Um, like a schoolboy, but fancy".
CANON HISTORY:
An incomplete summary is available here, but to expand on that:
Very little is known about his personal life before entering the story, as he tells Magnus, Taako and Merle (Tres Horny Boys, THB) that he's not allowed to say where he's from. We don't even know if he has a proper family; he mentions his dad in passing and that he's off to visit his grandpa, but nothing else ever comes up.
We first meet Angus McDonald on the Rockport Limited, the second arc of The Adventure Zone, where he is a very fancy boy sitting on a very fancy train, hunting down a serial killer by the Rockport City Council named the Rockport Slayer: he targets wealthy victims and kills them without a trace, but Angus has still been able to track him down to being on this particular train. Within literal seconds of the THB trying to explain why they can't tell Angus about the rare and powerful item they're after, the Oculus (one of the seven most powerful magical items in the universe), Angus works out exactly why they can't tell him. He is a good detective.
He's also the first on-scene when someone screams shortly later, and he's the first to discover the corpse of Jenkins, the wizard attendant, in the passenger cars - and the invisible monster hiding immediately above it. He also manages to drag an unconscious man out of the immediate area while the THB fight said monster. Angus is the one who ultimately works out the body's cause of death - dismemberment by magical portal closing on the victim's neck - but is part of the collective discovery that Jenkins is the one behind it, not the victim of it, and that he's locked himself in the cargo cart to steal the aforementioned Oculus.
The THB manage to break into the cart, defeat Jenkins and prevent the now-runaway train from crashing into Neverwinter
CANON PERSONALITY:
- "He is a very good, well respected, clever, smart and talented boy. Overall a very very good boy!"
- A very direct and honest boy. If he has pertinent information, he will willingly and eagerly share it with whoever needs or wants to know. He's not necessarily sarcastic, but speaks with such frank and sincere directness that it's very easy to mistake as such (but sometimes he is).
- Has seen some shit. Has been hunting a serial murderer for some time by the time he's introduced to the story, shows no issues with bloodied, decapitated and dehanded corpses, and was a fighter during the Day of Story and Song, aka the literal apocalypse. Is able to hold himself with poise and presence during serious or high-stakes times.
- Is openly self-conscious about his age; being a child means it's very hard to get taken seriously, even with a good few police cases under his belt, and he frequently refers to himself as a little boy.
- At the end of the day, is still just a kid. He feels things very deeply, gets attached to people very quickly and is quick to panic when he's placed with a large amount of responsibility in an area he has no prior experience in (for example, he was almost in tears when he had to fire the Bureau of Balance's cannons for the first time and thought he might legitimately kill the THB).
POINT OF DEPARTURE: A year after the Day of Story and Song, after Killian and Carey's wedding.
VETERAN?: Yes! Pre-Moebius, the poor child. Fell into a dungeon shortly after Moebius, during which he Investigated, and hasn't been seen since.
ABILITIES:
- A world-class detective! One who was hired by a populous city's police force in order to find a serial killer - which he does!
- A very good aim, with both spells and his hand-crossbow.
- Stronger than he probably should be for his age: is able to quite easily drag an unconscious human male along behind him.
- Has been tutored by the world's greatest transmutation wizard (and master chef); is also studying at a college of Arcane Sciences, and is quite close to making tenure.
INVENTORY:
- A wand and spellbook!
- A detective’s toolkit, which contains a mirror on a stick and a notebook and a magnifying glass and a dusting kit and a grappling hook and… all kinds of stuff.
- Another notebook and pencil.
- Book of Interception: a blue book that intercepts magically transmitted messages, preventing the intended receiver from obtaining it, and prints the message in the reader's language of preference.
- A hand-held crossbow, able to fit and hide up his sleeve. Presumably also bolts.
- A two-inch whittling knife, originally belonging to Magnus's grandfather.
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW?
Angus probably made a very real attempt to write down as many of the deaths he suffered during Moebius, specifically focusing on how and by whose hand.
Since we don't know his level or list of known spells, just that he's had teachers who are experts in transmutation, necromancy and has a book on divination, and that somehow he knows spells that aren't even on the wizard spell or cantrip lists, mostly I just plan on pulling his known spells out of a hat whenever I need them.
M A R K S;
JUSTIFICATION:
- Justice: Angus announces and defines himself as a detective, before anything else; the World's Greatest Detective, even. He is extremely curious, always wanting to know more about the world and people around him. He is a critical and analytical thinker, prioritises the truth above all else, and will make very concentrated attempts to get to it and make sure justice is properly dealt.
- High Priestess: This is a boy who trusts very highly in his intuition (and with an Insight of "can't really be lied to", that's pretty legit), and is arguably one of the most reasonable, cool-headed characters in the entire canon. He seems to have some established history in Divination, which works with Priestess's of 'knowing' and 'mystical vision'. As well, he very deeply and whole-heartedly cares about the THB very quickly after meeting them, and they himif less openly; to the point that post-canon, Magnus seems to adopt him.
- Emperor/Empress: please take care of this poor lost flesh boy.
VETO: Fool and Magician; these are my two other characters' Arcana.

ACTIONSPAM SAMPLE:
U-uhm... hello there, sirs or madams! Or both. Or-- o-or neither, maybe. There's a lot of genders, huh...
[There is a small boy on the network. Not that it's particularly unusual for Liminal Space to have an abundance of children, but until now all of the under-12s were girls.]
M-my name's Angus McDonald, and back home I'm the world's greatest detective, but... but I suppose here that's not really an important title, huh? Ahah...
[He sounds horribly nervous, too. And to some of the veterans, probably familiar...]
PROSE SAMPLE: Test drive!. And another one!
